Many Leadership books written by John C. Maxwell were read by most people who find insights and principles of leadership. On his book 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization he discussed many things about leadership. The book was divided into many sections including the special section which tackles on “Create an Environment that unleashes 360 degree leaders. On section 1 he discussed the “Myths of Leading from the Middle of the Organization”. On myth #1, many people think about this; they can’t lead when they are not at the top.
Even guiding a person in a small task or even leading to what it should be a good member is still considered leading right? So, no matter what your position is you still can lead others. On the second myth, this is what the author called “the destination myth” (Maxwell, J. C. p8) which is not a good sign of being a leader. If you’ll only learn how to lead when you are on the top then you can’t be a good leader for must learn to lead yourself first to the top to be a leader. On the third myth, this is often thought by most people; influence is the main component of a leader.
No, to be great leader it should be because of the quality as a leadership that you have they will follow. On the fourth, one lesson is that you can’t control a person unless they will allow. Fifth, limitation doesn’t matter to where you are. The only thing that limits you is the being in you. On the sixth, some think that potential (maximum potential) can be reach when on the top. Your position doesn’t matter. Lastly it doesn’t need to be on top to lead. On section 2, Maxwell tackles about the challenges.
On the first, this is the fact that the leader has; the tension or pressure of being caught in the middle (Maxwell, J. C.). Do not allow this to happen. Work gradually but efficiently. Second, be an effective leader, let your quality makes them follow you. Third, be flexible. Fourth, be as effective as possible so that you will not be out of place. Fifth, do not worry if your works are not recognized. Let other person acknowledges your fulfillment. Sixth, create a vision, this is common. How could you achieve if you do not set what you’re trying to achieve?
Seventh, its not really easy leading people beyond your position bu8t let them follow you because of who you are (quality). Section 3 discussed about the principles. First, to be a leader you must lead yourself to follow your leader (you must be a good follower). In that way you could be a great leader. Second, lighten your leader’s load (Maxwell, J. C. ). How? Work your task and be initiative. Third, be a good servant. One thing that strikes me when we were practicing is that when we find that nobody among us wants to buy food.
Then after arguing our leader (sitting in one corner) bought. We were speechless then. A good leader leads by example. Fourth, lead and do not manage. Fifth, spend time with them. One book of Maxwell discussed this issue: Relationship 101. give time to know your constituents, sixth, time is one of the most precious element of life and no money can afford to buy it that’s why when you take your leader’s time be sure to use it not for nonsense on the seventh principle, this is the result of giving time for bonding and knowing; you will know when to push and when to back off.
Eighth, be flexible. Ninth, always aim to be a better leader. Aim for improvement. Leadership is one of the most important elements in an organization. Everybody rises and fall in leadership. When it is mishandled, it will surely fall.
